In case you didn’t see it on TV or read it in the news, the Mob Museum teamed up with Vegas.com to offer a cool Valentine’s Day/Grand Opening event called Married at the Mob Museum… and they graciously invited Gaia to participate!

A contest that runs through Jan. 31 will pick seven lucky couples to get married or renew their vows at the Mob Museum on Valentine’s Day, which also happens to be the day city officials will cut the ribbon on the latest downtown cultural venue.

Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will officiate the ceremonies, and the winning couples will be the first public visitors to go inside the museum. They will also get air travel to Las Vegas, two nights at the El Cortez Hotel, flowers by yours truly, photos and a champagne brunch.

Do not despair, Gaia fans! We’re still right where we’ve been since 2009… sort of. On Jan. 1, we consolidated our flower and gift shop, and design studio in the space at 6 E. Charleston, which we used to occupy in addition to the space next door, at No. 4. (The sign will soon follow!)

This is a great move, mainly because it makes way for art studios/galleries that will be opening on either side of us at No. 4 and No. 8. We are super excited that our new neighbors are bringing more art to the Arts District and livening up the south side of Charleston between Main and Casino Center.

It also allows us to keep delivering the beautiful, eco-friendly floral arrangements in locally handmade vases and pots for which you’ve grown to know and love Gaia. Over the last two and a half years, we realized we didn’t need 3,000 square feet to give you what you want from us: high-quality, socially responsible products at great prices.

Konner Fleming

This First Friday, Nov. 4, Gaia hosts singer-song writer Konner Mary Fleming for her first performance in Las Vegas.

Originally from Washington State, Konner has lived here for about a year. She sings in a style influenced by both classic rock and folk rock, drawing inspiration from The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Janis Joplin and many others. Konner’s first album is currently in production, with plans to release it at the end of the year. At Gaia, she’ll perform both covers and original work.

Stop by for one of her two, half-hour sets, beginning at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. We’ll have limited seating and refreshments for those staying to enjoy the soulful voice of this talented songstress.

Gaia was honored to do the flowers for our friends and neighbors (from SPACE) of the last two years. And the occasion provided our first opportunity to contribute to a wedding in a national park. It was a uniquely wonderful experience – for everyone who was there, we dare say.

Robert Arnold's Mobile No. 9

Starting tonight (Thursday, Oct. 6), Gaia is hosting a special event to benefit Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas. A Night in the Dog House, as it’s called, was the idea of resident artist Robert Arnold, a local printmaker who also works in clay and wood, and has recently been creating mixed media mobiles and stabiles. Robert is the proud owner of four rescued greyhounds.

For October’s Preview Thursday and First Friday, proceeds from sales of all Robert’s work will be donated to GPA, which places ex-racing greyhounds into loving homes in the greater Las Vegas Valley. Gaia will also  offer product specials and hold a raffle to raise money for the nonprofit organization.

Some incredible donations have been made to support the event, including two free tickets to the South Bay Yoga Conference by Jules Mitchell, artwork by Leslie Rowland, and pottery by Kelly McClendon. Ceramist Shari Bray and jewelry designer Ashleigh Edwards have also discounted their work for the event.

Gaia centerpiece at Chefs, Wine & Spirits Too

Gaia cooked up a special end-of-summer centerpiece arrangement for Roseman University of Health Science’s Chefs, Wine & Spirits Too fundraiser event, held Sept. 8 at Mandarin Oriental hotel.

The design featured miniature mums in the shape of hot dogs and hamburgers on a small grill over a “lawn” of wheat grass.

Florists were invited to enter arrangements inspired by the theme “on the wings of summer” in a design competition. Although we didn’t win, participating was a blast, and we were thrilled to know that funds raised by auctioning off our arrangement at the end of the dinner will support the college’s mobile health clinics.

Because we set out to create a more sustainable model of flower shop, Gaia seemed like a perfect name. Whenever possible (based on supply and demand), we use certified sustainably grown cut flowers, locally gathered accents and containers handmade in Las Vegas for our arrangements. We also do things like recycle all recyclable waste and compost plant and flower clippings.

Local artist Kelly McLendon has work in a show opening tomorrow at the Sahara West Library (Sahara and Grand Canyon). Called Expressions in Clay, the show kicks off with a reception Thursday, Aug. 18, 5-6:30 p.m. It runs through Oct. 9.

Friends of Gaia will recognize Kelly’s style from the signature vases that are so popular for our live orchid and succulent arrangements (see photo, right).
